Google is moving ahead with its “next chapter” of the Gemini era by introducing the AI’s Pro model in Android Studio.

As detailed in a press release, Android Studio supports Google’s Gemini 1.0 Pro model. Gemini has taken over the old “Studio Bot” that developers found during the platform’s introduction in 2023. The company states that AI should help app developers create their products “faster” and “easier.” Those developing apps through Android Studio will find a host of features, beginning with “Ask Gemini.”

Google states Gemini can understand “natural language” from users’ text queries. A chat window will be available to developers so they can type their questions to Gemini. The company adds that you can ask questions such as “how do I add camera support to my app?” and “What’s the best way to get location on Android?”

The article states that Gemini will remember what users have asked, opening up the possibility of asking follow-up questions.

AI-powered code “completions” is another feature Gemini brings to the table. The AI is said to offer ideas on how developers can complete “multi-line” pieces of code. Additionally, users should also discover suggestions for code comments and ways to add documentation to their strings of code.

Gemini in Android Studio comes packed with its own “Generative AI app” starter template. This template is based on the Gemini model’s API so users can quickly plug AI-powered features into their apps. The API supports image and text inputs alongside summarization, translation, and more capabilities.

Google states those interested can find this API template in the Canary release channel for Android Studio. Head over to File > New Project > Gemini API Starter to get going.

Privacy is a talking point with AI, and Google states Gemini in Android Studio was designed to keep your code between you and the bot during that session. It states that “by default,” Gemini’s responses are based on your conversation history with it. Users are given the choice of whether or not they’d like to submit additional information for “customized responses.”

Moreover, Gemini in Android Studio is only available after developers log into their accounts and enable it. Google reiterates that it will continue to stick with its AI Principles to ensure user safety with its software.

Gemini is available beginning today (Apr. 8) in its Android Studio Jellyfish preview version in over 180 countries. Google reiterates that developers can utilize these tools at no cost, however, that will change at some point in the future.

We’ve seen the leaks for months, and now we’ve got our hands on what could be the first batch of Google Pixel 8a cases from Poetic. These cases give us a proper idea of what the Pixel 8a should look like if Google unveils the new budget-priced phone at Google I/O 2024 next month, as we anticipate.

While the two rugged case models are great for folks who need extra protection, I’m particularly interested in what the other two case models reveal. The Poetic Neon Pixel 8a case showcases substantially rounder edges than the Google Pixel 7a has. As I noted in my Pixel 8 Pro review, rounded corners make phones much nicer to hold one-handed.

If the Pixel 8a has rounder corners, it would make the phone feel slightly smaller. Indeed, the Poetic Neon case suggests that the Pixel 8a could be ever-so-slightly smaller than the Pixel 7a, as I’m not able to fit a Pixel 7a into Poetic’s Pixel 8a case.

Poetic’s case designs seem to match up nicely with several Pixel 8a design leaks. Many times, case manufacturers can get ahold of “dummy” phone models before a phone’s release, allowing them to design cases based on early designs. As such, there’s always a likelihood that the final phone design could differ from what’s on offer here.

Either way, we hope Google doesn’t ditch the camera bar design on this phone as it looks like they might on the Pixel 9 and Pixel Fold 2.

Lastly, the inclusion of a MagSafe ring on the Poetic Guardian MagSafe Pixel 8a case tells me that the new Qi2 wireless charging standard is still not ready for prime time. Or, at the least, Google may not be willing to fork over any extra R&D for a budget-minded phone.

Android Central has reached out to Google about Poetic’s Pixel 8a cases, but the company did not get back to us in time for publication. We will update the article once we have more information.

The Pixel 8a is rumored to retail for around $500 but is rumored to see a bit of a price hike over the Pixel 7a. Thankfully, the best Pixel 7a deals will get you that phone for hundreds less than the rumored Pixel 8a price.

One of the main Quest 3 perks over other headsets is its full-color passthrough. While we liked how it worked out of the box, we’ve noticed an immediate improvement since updating our headsets to the Quest v64 update — and we’ll show you footage.

Announced on Monday, the Quest v64 update was designed to “improve the perceived resolution for passthrough by optimizing the passthrough pipeline,” according to Meta. In practice, it’s meant to make it easier to read “phone notifications and other small text,” so you can check your messages without removing the headset. 

At the same time, the Quest v64 update changed the “camera processing pipeline” to “improve color, exposure, contrast and dynamic range in passthrough.” Meta says this makes color fidelity closer to real life and reduces “graininess in lower light conditions.”

My colleague and fellow VR nerd Nick Sutrich donned his Quest 3 and recorded passthrough footage after downloading the update, which you can see in the embedded video below.

Overall, the quality looks great, and it’s easier to see text on phone or TV screens than before. That said, we did notice some obvious object warping when it moves. Your hand doesn’t warp as you move it, but the room around the edges of your hand does warp slightly. 

The Quest v64 notes don’t mention any improvements related to warping, something we’ve noticed in the past. Clearly, this is something you’ll have to get used to, at least for now! 

With the Quest 3 and Apple Vision Pro competing for VR fans’ love, this update is clearly designed to make the cheaper headset closer to the high-res Vision Pro in passthrough quality. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg roasted the Vision Pro earlier this year, criticising (in part) the Apple headset’s passthrough for its “motion blur.”

Beyond passthrough, the v64 update supports external mics connected via the USB-C port if you enable it in Experimental Settings. Unlike other accessories like keyboards or mice, you won’t be able to connect one over Bluetooth. This change came after Meta fixed Quest 3’s internal mic issues in a previous update. 

While the Quest v63 update added support for playing the Quest 2 or Quest Pro while lying down, the Quest 3 was left behind. Now, with v64, Quest 3 owners can enable “Use Apps While Lying Down” in Experimental Settings, then lie down and hold the Oculus button to change their perspective. 

We recommend looking into Pillow, a Quest app designed before Meta’s lying-down update with cute experiences like stargazing, meditation, and bedtime stories. Ironically, the developer Lucas Rizzotto complained on Twitter/X that the v63 update broke his app, but he appears to have fixed it prior to v64.

The last major feature update ensures that if you remove your Meta Quest headset while casting to a TV, the headset will “keep the stream alive” instead of going black. Now you can take a break or pass the headset to someone else without having to reset the casting settings — especially useful for those unfamiliar with VR!

Considering Meta temporarily removed casting from Quest before bringing casting back this January, it’s nice to see that Meta is continuing to improve the feature, rather than letting it languish.

The last total solar eclipse to cover the continental U.S. came and went earlier today, April 8, and it left behind a massive amount of people reporting eye pain. We all know that it isn’t a great idea to look directly at the sun, but the rules change a bit during a solar eclipse. With the right eye protection (special eclipse glasses) and a bit of care, you should be able to view the total solar eclipse safely. However, as shown by Google Trends data, that wasn’t the case for everyone. 

Searches for “my eyes hurt” on Google experienced a huge burst starting at 1 p.m. ET. They peaked at around 3:20 p.m. ET, with search volumes easily quadruple the average figures for the past year. These times line up with when the solar eclipse was making its way over the continental U.S., starting with the southernmost portion of the country and continuing through Canada. Similar searches for topics like “Why does eclipse hurt your eyes?” and “Why do my eyes keep watering?” spiked as well following the solar eclipse.

Breaking it down by state, searchers were highest in Vermont, West Virginia, Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana. Of those states, only one (West Virginia) was not at least partially in the path of totality. However, keep in mind that the top states are constantly shifting as Google Trends data evolves.

Why are people searching for “my eyes hurt” following the total solar eclipse? It probably comes from a lack of understanding about when and how it is safe to look at the phenomenon. Per the National Solar Observatory (NSO), you can only look at the sun during a total solar eclipse without eye protection when there is complete totality. If there is even one percent of the sun visible, that is not complete totality, and this can damage your eyes. Additionally, totality only lasts for a short period of time. 

“During totality, you may view the Sun without proper eye protection, such as solar glasses,” the NSO explains. “But during all other phases of the eclipse, you should only look at the Sun when your eyes are protected.”

Separately, a last-minute recall exposed that some protective eclipse glasses were “potentially failing to meet safety standards.” They were sold on Amazon, meaning that people could have unknowingly bought them in a number of states, believing the glasses to be protective. Using sunglasses or any other kind of faulty eclipse glasses doesn’t protect you from the sun, and this could cause eye pain. 

Hopefully, you were able to experience the eclipse without any eye pain and maybe got some sick photos of it, too. If you do happen to be suffering from persistent eye pain, it’s probably a good idea to reach out to a medical professional rather than Google.

Fiio’s entry-level products are among the best you’ll find in the segment, and the reason for that is the brand’s focus on value. Having tested nearly two dozen Fiio products over the course of the last 18 months, I can say with some guarantee that the brand usually offers the best value in whatever segment it is targeting.

And while hero products like the K9 Pro DAC and R7 all-in-one network streamer do a great job bringing attention to the brand, it’s budget IEMs like the FH11 that lead sales charts. The FH11 is a hybrid IEM that uses a 10mm dynamic driver in conjunction with a balanced armature driver, and what makes it stand out is the design and affordability — coming in at just $54 on Amazon, the FH11 is one of Fiio’s most affordable IEMs yet.

The FH11 has an interesting design that doesn’t have many similarities to the rest of the brand’s IEM portfolio. Fiio dubs this design Bionic Conch, noting that it creates a “sense of flow” and elevated sound quality. What I like is that the zinc alloy chassis looks great, and the design looks much more upmarket than the entry-level price tag.

The faceplate has a star pattern that looks elegant, and the only issue I have with the design is that the faceplate tends to pick up smudges easily. Fiio is known to bundle plenty of accessories with its IEMs, and you get six sets of ear tips with the FH11 — three balanced and three bass-focused. You should be able to find something that fits with relative ease.

The metal shells are clearly built to last and have better build quality than most IEMs in this segment, but they are on the heavier side, coming in at 10g each. That affects the comfort, and while I didn’t have any issues getting these to fit, they exert pressure on the inner ear, and it is noticeable with extended use. The design allows for standout noise isolation, particularly if you’re using the bass tips.

Fiio hasn’t made many changes on the cable side of things, and you get a decent 4-strand braided cable that ends in a 3.5mm jack. The cable connects to the shell via standard 2-pin connectors, with blue and red indicators (left and right).

With a sensitivity of 111dB and 24Ω, the FH11 is easy to drive with any source. That said, you will need to use a good dongle DAC to get the most out of the se IEMs, and in my testing, I paired it with Fiio’s KA5 and the M15S audio player. Using a powerful source unlocks the potential of the sound, leading to a much more vibrant profile.

On that note, the FH11 is designed to deliver an energetic bass; if you want better resolution and imaging, you should consider the FD11 instead. Both IEMs share the same design and aesthetics, but they differ in the drivers and tuning. The FH11 uses a custom 10mm carbon dynamic driver — similar to that of the $200 FH15 — and this driver is lighter while having a high tensile strength, allowing it to deliver faster transients and less distortion.

That is clearly evident in the sound; the FH11 has an elevated bass shelf that gives it a distinct sound characteristic, and the low-end has a lot of exuberance that sometimes bleeds into the mid-range. The mids are a bit recessed, but you still get clarity at the higher end of the frequency range, and vocals shine through. The treble is overly bright at times, and you do get some sibilance.

On the whole though, the FH11 manages to produce a fun sound that pairs well with a lot of genres, and what is misses out in technicality, it more than makes up with vibrancy. You don’t buy this IEM if you want a neutral sound with good resolution — you get this if you want the best bass in the budget segment.

A dongle DAC is the easiest way to connect IEMs and enthusiast headsets to your phone. These days, there are dozens of great choices that don’t cost too much money, and Fiio by itself has a ton of enticing products in this segment. While the Chinese audio manufacturer sells a lot of high-end products and has ventured into a lot of new categories over the last 12 months, it is still at its best when making budget DACs, and the KA13 is one of its best yet.

The KA13 has a lot of similarities to the KA5 dongle DAC I reviewed last year, and while there isn’t a TFT panel this time around, you get 3.5mm and 4.4mm ports, a great DAC, and plenty of power — this tiny dongle delivers up to 550mW, and is able to drive any IEM or headset.

The KA13 is available for just $79 on Amazon, making it a standout value — just like the rest of Fiio’s dongle DAC offerings. Like its siblings, the DAC is branded under the Jade Audio label; this means the product is aimed at a younger audience and budget-focused, but other than that distinction, there isn’t any difference in terms of build quality or features.

Fiio doesn’t usually change the design of its products, and the KA13 is about the same size as its siblings, the KA3 and KA5. It uses the same metal enclosure, but the design is a little cleaner, and there’s a tiny window next to the USB-C port that lights up when the DAC is in use.

At just 18.5g, the KA13 is about as portable as a dongle DAC can get while still offering high-quality DAC hardware. If you want a design that stands out a bit, the white version definitely looks striking. The underside has a glass back and Jade Audio branding along with an intricate pattern that looks stylish, and on the whole, the KA13 looks like a product that should cost a lot more than $79.

A new addition on the KA13 is a toggle that enables desktop mode. You also get a volume rocker that lets you adjust the volume with ease, and the connectors are located at either ends — one side has USB-C, and the other has a single-ended 3.5mm jack and a balanced 4.4mm out.

Fiio bundles a short USB-C to USB-C cable in the box, and you get a dongle to use with USB-A ports, and a USB-C to Lightning cable if you don’t have the iPhone 15 and are using an older model. I used the USB-C connector with my iPhone 15 Pro Max, and there were no issues whatsoever. But a bulk of the testing was done with the DAC paired to the Magic 6 Pro, Pixel 8 Pro, and Xiaomi 14.

Easily the best part about using the KA13 is its versatility; you can connect the DAC to your phone, tablet, Windows machine, and any other device that has a USB-C port and get great audio out, no drivers needed. I used the DAC with Fiio’s entry-level FH11 IEMs, and it did a (predictably) great job. Given the power on offer, I also used it with the demanding FX15, FT5 headset, and a slew of products over the course of three months.

My main takeaway is that the KA13 is one of the most powerful dongle DACs you can buy today. It has more than enough power to drive any IEM, and it also handles demanding headsets with ease. The DAC is able to deliver 290mW at 16Ω and 170mW at 32Ω over the 3.5mm port, going up to 500mW at 16Ω and 550mW at 32Ω via the balanced 4.4mm port. These numbers are when the desktop mode is enabled, and honestly, if you’re using anything other than sensitive IEMs, it makes sense to toggle the mode.

The KA13 uses dual Cirrus Logic CS43131 DAC chips combined with an SG Micro SGM8262 amp, and if that sounds familiar, it’s because Fiio used the same configuration inside the KB3 keyboard that also houses a DAC. The KA13 is able to hit 384kHz/32-bit via PCM and DSD128, and while the KA5 is able to go up to 768kHz, it doesn’t quite manage to deliver the same level of power.

Coming to the sound, the KA13 has a slightly narrower soundstage than the KA5, but where it excels is the tonality. It is able to deliver a clean low-end with good articulation, natural mids with great vocal clarity, and good treble extension. Using it with the FX15 was an absolute joy, and the DAC clearly has a lot of potential.

But it’s the power that it is able to deliver that makes it unique; if you want a dongle DAC that can drive demanding headsets, this is the one to get. Obviously, the KA13 has a higher power draw than other DACs in this segment, but the fact that you’re able to get this level of power out of such a small chassis is an achievement in and of itself.
